Charcoal Works
The charcoal works are where intimacy and atmosphere converge. Charcoal allows me to move between tenderness and drama, to capture both the quiet presence of a beloved pet and the gravity of a figure standing against ruins. Each piece begins with the same process: paper, dust, and gesture. Yet the outcomes vary widely... a lion bathed in contemplative light, a farmer’s gate opening onto memory, an elder’s face etched with decades of life, a fleeting shadow of children, or a solitary woman surrounded by birds in flight. I return to charcoal again and again because of its immediacy. It can be bold and forceful in one moment, soft and whispering in the next. Its tonal range mirrors the human condition: resilience, loss, joy, and quiet observation all find their way into these drawings. These works are not bound to a single theme but are united by their exploration of presence... of being fully alive in a fleeting instant. They are portraits not only of people and animals, but also of moments, emotions, and landscapes that invite the viewer to pause and look more closely.
